One of the consistent symptoms associated with mood disorders is disrupted sleep patterns.  Researchers are looking into the question of whether sleep disruption makes someone more susceptible to mood disorders or do mood disorders cause disruptions in sleep.

Diagnosis of ADHD in children and adolescents increased to 10.2% in 2016.

The diagnosis of ADHD increased from 6.1% in 1997-1998 to 10.2% in 2015-2016 across age, gender, race/ethnicity, income and geography, but is notably twice as high in girls and Hispanic children and has more than doubled for Black children, according to a study just published in the JAMA Network Open.  (George, Cindy. Several Texas Medical Center experts said the analysis confirmed the trends they have observed over the last two decades.  “Many parents recognize that they have it, so they are willing to let their kids be diagnosed.” according to Memorial Hermann Health System child psychiatrist Carlos Guerra, M.D.

In 23 states, medical marijuana is allowed for treatment of post traumati stress disorder (PTSD). Texas is not on that list. State Senator José Menédez from San Antonio filed bill 269 in 2017 , hoping to help make medicinal marijuana available in Texas, just like many other prescription drugs on the market. (Durain, Leah. No hearings are scheduled for that legislation in Texas for now. So patients dealing with the symptoms of PTSD must still rely on the following traditional treatments and therapies.

A study reported in News-Medical.net of adults with treatment-resistant depression identified dosage levels of the anesthetic drug ketamine that appears to provide significant symptom relief. The study found that two different low dose levels were more effective than an active placebo in reducing depression symptoms over a three-day period. Shrourou, Alina, BSc (October 11, 2018) Researchers identify effective ketamine dosage levels for patients with treatment-resistant depression News-Medical.net

The results of this study were published in the October 2018 issue of Molecular Psychiatry. It was led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators and included 99 adults with treatment-resistant depression at six research centers, including Baylor College of Medicine/Debakey VA Medical Center, and University of Texas/Southwestern Medical Center.

Ketamine has been used as a general anesthetic drug for some time. Studies have found it to rapidly relieve depression symptoms when given at low doses. The MGH study focused on determining the optimal dose for effective relief for treatment-resistant depression. To investigate that question, the study tested four different ketamine dosages compared with a placebo. Participants receiving ketamine had significantly greater symptom improvement during the three days after infusion than did those in the control group.

“Treatment resistance in depression is a major issue, with more than half of patients not responding adequately to standard, appropriate antidepressant treatment,” says Maurizio Fava, MD, executive director of the Clinical Trials Network & Institute in the MGH Department of Psychiatry and senior author of the Molecular Psychiatry paper. “There are only a few approved therapies that can help some patients with treatment-resistant depression, so we critically need more options to choose from.”

Co-author Cristina Cusin, MD, who directs the MGH Psychiatry ketamine clinic, says “These results support the clinical observation that one size does not fit all; and each patient needs a tailored treatment plan that may include ketamine, together with other medications and talk therapy.” Fava, the Slater Family Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, adds, “Along with supporting the efficacy of intravenous ketamine for patients with treatment-resistant depression, our study also suggests that even lower doses may be effective in some patients. Further investigation should examine the efficacy of repeat doses of ketamine, as well as whether higher doses may require less frequent administration.”

ADHD Awareness Month is celebrated every October with events and activities around the world and on the Internet designed to educate the public.  The adhdawarenessmonth.org event is focused on sharing the most recent developments in best practices for dealing with ADHD based on the evidence of science and peer-reviewed research.

The 2018 “Setting the Record Straight” theme for 2018’s ADHD Awareness Month is designed to encourage children, families, adults and professionals to share what they want the world to know about their personal experience with ADHD through video, stories, art, and meme contests.  ADHD patients, families and friends are invited to help set the record straight and spread the facts, rebut the myths, and provide hope and help to adults and children with Attention Deficit Disorder around the world.  Anyone with a message about their experience with ADHD can share their story,  share a photo or image , or create a Internet meme that is funny, irreverent, witty, bold, or even ridiculous.

All submissions are entered into contests for prizes to encourage contributions to the effort to raise ADHD awareness, remove stigma, and empower people with ADHD so they can unleash their strengths and create a life they love.  You can also vote on the the videos already submitted that you think tell the best story about ADHD.  Each time you view a submission to the video contest you automatically register a vote for that video.

This annual effort to build awareness ADHD Coaches OrganizationAttention Deficit Disorder AssociationCHADD, The National Resource on ADHDabout people’s experience with ADHD is organized by a coalition made up of the ADHD Coaches Organization, Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA) and Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD).  This year’s ADHD Awareness Month culminates with the 2018 Annual International Conference on ADHD to be held November 8 – 11, 2018 in St. Louis, MO.

Many adults who live with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder don’t recognize it because its symptoms are often mistaken for a stressful life.  The World Health Organization developed an 18 question Adult ADHD Self Screener and a 6 question Checklist to help recognize the signs and symptoms of Adult ADHD.

These self-screeening tools are not meant to replace consultation with a trained healthcare professional. An accurate diagnosis can only be made through a clinical evaluation. Regardless of the questionnaire results, if you have concerns about diagnosis and treatment of Adult ADHD, please discuss your concerns with your physician, or contact the Beaumont Psychiatric online or call our office.
