Diagnosis of ADHD in children and adolescents increased to 10.2% in 2016.

The diagnosis of ADHD increased from 6.1% in 1997-1998 to 10.2% in 2015-2016 across age, gender, race/ethnicity, income and geography, but is notably twice as high in girls and Hispanic children and has more than doubled for Black children, according to a study just published in the JAMA Network Open.  (George, Cindy. Several Texas Medical Center experts said the analysis confirmed the trends they have observed over the last two decades.  “Many parents recognize that they have it, so they are willing to let their kids be diagnosed.” according to Memorial Hermann Health System child psychiatrist Carlos Guerra, M.D.

In 23 states, medical marijuana is allowed for treatment of post traumati stress disorder (PTSD). Texas is not on that list. State Senator José Menédez from San Antonio filed bill 269 in 2017 , hoping to help make medicinal marijuana available in Texas, just like many other prescription drugs on the market. (Durain, Leah. No hearings are scheduled for that legislation in Texas for now. So patients dealing with the symptoms of PTSD must still rely on the following traditional treatments and therapies.

A study reported in of adults with treatment-resistant depression identified dosage levels of the anesthetic drug ketamine that appears to provide significant symptom relief. The study found that two different low dose levels were more effective than an active placebo in reducing depression symptoms over a three-day period. The constant, increasingly urgent news reports about this year’s Hurricane season and the oncoming Hurricane Florence is triggering a lot of memories about Hurricane Harvey’s impact in Southeast Texas almost exactly a year ago. For many people those memories can induce memories of the stress of the event and the emotional burden of coping through recovery that followed.
